| Selecting
Stocks and Adhesives |
Labels can be printed on different stocks, and stocks can have a variety
of adhesives. It is very important to select the right combination of
stock and adhesive for your application if you are planning to use this
label for anything other than a standard paper-on-paper application.
| Stock Choice Affects
Ink Color |
Ink colors will not appear as sharp and brilliant on matte or EDP Smudgeproof
stocks as they do on gloss or coated stock. Uncoated stocks tend to absorb
ink, while more ink remains on the surface of coated stocks. Ink colors
will also look slightly less brilliant on white and frosty clear vinyl because
of the nature of the materials and the inks used for printing.
Below is a brief description of the characteristics of each type of stock
available. Remember that not every stock is available
with every type of label. Please request a sample for testing in any application
not specifically recommended.
White Gloss: For high quality labels with a lustrous appearance.
Used when it is not necessary to write or type on label. Two year indoor
life in ideal storage environment.
White Matte: Excellent for labels that are to be written or typed
on. Correctability may be limited on some typewriters. Two year indoor
life in ideal storage environment.
White EDP Gloss: Gives the same lustrous appearance as White Gloss,
but it is designed for use with typewriters and non-laser computer printers.
Correctability may be limited on some typewriters. Two year indoor life
in ideal storage environment.
White EDP Smudgeproof: This is a porous and absorbent stock designed
for excellent printability and provides the smudge resistance necessary
in non-laser electronic data processing operations and high-speed imprinting.
Two year indoor life in ideal storage environment.
Fluorescent: This matte-coated, bright DaygloTM paper is used
for eye-catching, attention getting effect. Available in red, orange,
chartreuse, pink, and green. Black ink is recommended for type. Two year
indoor life in ideal storage environment.
Foil: Foil is laminated to paper to provide a bright or dull metallic
appearance. Used for sizzling effects when it is not necessary to write
on label. Available in shiny or dull, gold or silver. Two year indoor
life in ideal storage environment.
White Vinyl: Vinyl is durable, weather resistant, and can be used
indoors or outdoors as well as in some harsh environments (see chart).
Special removable adhesive for bumper stickers or permanent adhesive for
all other applications is available. Three year indoor or 1½- year
outdoor life.
Frosty Clear Vinyl: This material appears nearly clear
when applied. Durable and weather resistant, it is ideal for window decals.
We recommend printing white ink behind the image area for greater readability;
this will be done at no additional charge. Adhesive can be applied either
to the front or the back, depending on the viewing direction. Three year
indoor or 1½- year outdoor life.
Static Cling Vinyl: This clear or white vinyl has a static charge
that allows it to stick without adhesive to most smooth, clean surfaces
such as glass, plastic, or baked-enamel finishes. Easily removed or repositioned,
it leaves the surface clean when removed. Clear Static Cling stock is
available with static on the front or back. White Static Cling stock is
available with static on the back.
Polyester: This is a highly durable synthetic film used primarily
for outdoor applications and situations involving high levels of abrasion
or abuse, such as product identification. Polyester will stand up longer
in a moist environment and is resistant to most oils and solvents. We
will automatically laminate some polyester decals at no additional
charge. Fluorescent inks are not available. Four-year indoor life.
Two year outdoor life
Thermal: Thermal Transfer and Direct Transfer stocks are guaranteed
to be compatible with leading printers and scales. The ultra smooth surface
and special adhesives allow excellent scanning and instant adherence to
corrugated boxes and shrink-wrap film.
Piggyback labels are on two liners so the top label can be removed
and re-applied to another surface. Please ask for details.
Laser Label Stock: Laser printers require special inks, adhesives
and stock to work properly without jamming the printer. We offer a wide
variety of laser stocks, including color tints, as blank or custom printed
labels. Check Laser Labels for more details.
Laser Latex is more moisture resistant, flexible and has a more
aggressive adhesive than our other laser stocks.
Laser Duplex construction combines labels with non-pressure sensitive
stock on a single sheet. Available in a variety of configurations. Please
ask for details.
Laser Satin is a paper label stock that looks like satin fabric
and is often used for name badges.
Laser Card Stock is a Bristol Card stock made to go through laser
printers without jamming. This stock does not have adhesive. Often the
stock is perforated and used in badge and sign holders.
| Performance Under Pressure: Adhesives at work |
Permanent adhesive is supplied unless you request otherwise. This
adhesive is designed to be non-removable once the label is applied.
Removable adhesive will allow the label to be taken off once it
is applied without leaving pieces of the label behind. Note: A label will become permanent over time, and with exposure to weather.
Some surfaces, such as wood, silk, and suede may be damaged by removable
adhesive. Always test a sample label before applying it where it could
do damage.
Wide temperature Adhesive is designed to stick in very cold and
very hot temperatures. This adhesive becomes permanent after 24 hours
and will adhere to vinyl surfaces.
Opaque Concealer is a colored adhesive that obscures the application
surface so that it doesn't "show through" the label stock. This
is useful if you are using a label to cover erroneous or outdated information,
or if the surface color could affect the appearance of the label. The
opaque adhesive may slightly affect the appearance of the ink color
If your label needs to perform where it is damp, cold, hot, abrasive,
or exposed to chemicals and solvents; be sure to let use know. The chart
below shows which stocks can be used for these applications.
